Expats in thailand, what profession are you in?
after travelling in asia for two years, my (english) girlfriend and I both fell in love with the place and would like to move there but would obviously like to earn a western wage but dont really know where to start.
we're both 24, she has a degree in marine biology and I a BSc in psychology and speak fluent german and english
we're on £26k (about 1.2million baht i think) each at the moment without overtime..... she as a production planner for a dairy company and myself as a project managing engineer for a manufacturing company producing and installing shelving for supermarkets.
as you can tell, we're hardly setting the world alight in what we're doing and just really care about the money. we dont expect to earn that much in thailand but enough to live comfortably
so may i ask what you do and can you give us any advice
or is this more of a pipe dream and shall we just save up our money here and in 10 years set up just another bar somewhere?

Well, I teach English as a second language. I also teach TOEFL prep at a private agency. There are many foreigners here who came here to teach. A few who were backpackers and decided to stay so they picked up a cheap TEFL certificate and began teaching to make extra money and stay a bit longer.
The other foreigners here are with other corporations, and companies, or are living here on their retirement or social security.
I read one of the responses to your question and have to agree with what the guy said, that it's not a great idea to open a business here in Thailand. The police are thoroughly corrupt here and will most likely be the downfall of your little expedition unless you know somebody who can stave them off. Most will require you to line their pockets, or they'll pull some rabbit out of the hat and fine you for some damn thing.
I make decent money doing teaching and also teaching some kids locally on a private basis. I charge the going rate of 340 baht an hour here in Southern Thailand, and can make enough to live very comfortably.
Thailand is NOT a foreigner friendly place to live though, and immigration laws are a mess here and do not make it easy for a foreigner to make a buck.
