what are the basic things to consider and take during travel via air to another country? (first time travel)?

I'm going to thailand oficially by this month end, and what are the basic accessories i should take considering the climate there? And what is the check in procedure to be followed in airport?

Passport? Get one ASAP, make copies of the first page with your picture and info. also make a copy of the visa when you get there. I never do, I rarely have to show ID when I am there. Put your passport in the room safe or hotel safe deposit box.

Visas? If you are an US Citizen you will not need one unless you are staying longer than 30 days.

An inflatable pillow helps sleep on the plane.
A small bottle of water to wet your throat between meals on the plane. You can always get a glass from the flight attendants.
Wear loose clothing but, don't dress like a American tourist. Asian tourists dress up more than Americans. You will get treated like a business person if you do.
With the current rules, I guess you can still take a toothbrush and toothpaste in your carry-on. That helps just before you deplane to clean your mouth out.
Carry whatever you feel would freshen you up just before you land if you can take it on or in your bag just before you leave the airport.

Basic check in, is to fillout the immigration card for Thai authorities on the plane, deplane, see a Thai immigration officer, have a picture taken, and then go pick up your baggage, then pass by the customs officer if there is one. You are now in Bangkok.

There are Money exchange kiosk in the airport. They are mostly the better rates. You should exchange the money you need immediately. If you are traveling beyond Bangkok. Either change all your money you expect to use or most of it. The exchange rate in Bangkok is usually not as good. Except sometimes at the Exchange kiosks in MBK center or Mah Boon Khram center in Pratunam district.

Being a woman, you will probably be carrying these anyway. Have a supply of facial tissue or sanitary wipes with you. Not all the public restrooms supply toilet paper nor paper towels. And sometimes the restaurants don't supply napkins.

It's been warm and raining recently, which mean warm and humid. Cotton clothing and dress in layers, the layering helps wick the persperation. A hat might be good for the rain and the sun. Though it may be overcast there. Suntan lotion just in case. Some good walking shoes both casual and dress. Of course depending on what you are doing.

If you are staying in Bangkok, take a taxi from the taxi stand. From the new Suvarnabhumi airport, I am not sure of the charges from there maybe around 200 baht. If you want a little more luxury, there are sedans that can cost from 800 Baht to 1000 baht depending on where you are staying. Or you can contact your hotel and ask to have their car pick you up. This may cost 600 to 800 baht. While traveling around Bangkok consider taking the subway and Skytrain. Cheap, clean and safe. The subway charges like 7 baht per station and the Skytrain you can get a 100 baht card for the day, go anywhere along either routes, all day.

How you dress is how you are treated there? Pretty important.

You should read about their customs. see www.Thailandguru.com for info.

Good luck and good trip.
