4.688 = 3.14 r
r=1.49 meters
The entire area diameter is 3 meters so it is the sidewalk that is 1 meter wide.

A circular walkway 1 m wide surrounds a circular flowerbed. The entire area, including the walkway is 21.98 sq.m. Calculate the radius of the flowerbed to the nearest tenth of a meter. Use pi=3.14.
Using the above formula, you would then easily calculate the radius of the large circle as 1.49 m (rounded to 1.5 m).
Since you know that the walkway takes up 1 m of that 1.5 m, then you know that the other .5 m must be the radius of the inner flowerbed.
Or you may simply announce that it is a trick question and clearly the radius of the flowerbed is .5 m.
